Farah Khan Ali: Stones Tell A Story

By: Monu Sharma, Feme Fashions Bureau, Kolkata Dt: 06/19/2010

Farah Khan Ali, renowned jewellery designer, with 15 years of focus and experience in this field, feels like a creativity-inclined soul, and got into jewellery designing by chance, only to discover that she was born for it! Her brand 'Farah Khan - Fine Jewellery' was launched in Mumbai in February 2004.

In an exclusive talk with femefashions, she speaks about her creations, inspiration, style and a lot more…

'Jewellery designer Farah Khan Ali', how did all this begin?

It all started from 1993, when I completed my training from ‘Gemological Institute of America’, Santa Monica, California. Later, 15 years of my spotlight and know-how made by jewellery sense stronger.

What kind of creations do you deal with?

My designs are statement oriented. I deal with Cocktail as well as Bridal collection. The construction and style is opulent and eye-catching. One will find more of Couture ornaments, with very flexible and flowing impact. The beauty of my exclusive designs studded with precious stones will surely please the wearer in a unique manner. My creations go very well with various body structures be it slim, skinny, large etc, giving any woman a feeling of being a perfect and confident woman'.

You are highly inspired by stones. How is stone studded jewellery different from diamond studded jewellery? What fascinates you more in a stone?

Stones have a story to tell; they are the playful character in jewellery. I am inspired by stones very much. I use lot of emerald in my designs also there are designs in tangenite, rubies and pearls. A stone studded design speaks its fresh statement.

Stones have a definite variety, lustre and colour. Hence, their unique interaction with the eyes, light etc is what fascinates me. It gives a new life to an ornament and also one who wears it gets a peaceful and the strong feel from within.

They have beautiful colour and texture, I use high quality and fine stones. Emerald is one of the stone I am very fond of. The striking green colour soothes the eyes and also emerald studded creation looks highly exceptional.

What inspires you the most while designing?

It is only nature that inspires me the most. Nature has a unique and pleasing beauty that attracts me very much.

What is Farah Khan's peculiarity?

I design one-of-a-kind pieces with coloured gemstones. I design ornaments that make a statement of it's own. For me, it is very important that people notice the creativity irrespective of the size. Even a small earring that I design, speaks of what the creation is all about.

Different people have their own taste but, instead I believe in my own creations and my imagination. I believe, in an ornament explanation of design is more important than the range and size.

What is the most interesting aspect of jewellery?

Imagination! It is something that’s in the mind and just moves along in the design, something unnamed and undefined. One never knows what comes in mind when and on cards.

How about your recent trip to Kolkata, when can the city expect you again?

I always wanted to showcase my stuff in Kolkata. It's a good city with lot of jewellery especially gemstone lovers. My designs were all from my collection of Jadau and Polki sets with some emerald and ruby diamond sets. I am very happy with the response and I shall get back soon, just that I don't know when...

What is your next move?

My days are very busy right now; I am looking forward to opening my franchise in different cities here and abroad too. I got an offer from the Zevar Lounge, Kolkata for my franchise, also from Los Angles, Singapore, Dubai etc. There is a lot on agenda, just trying to sort it out steadily one by one. I have much on cards now but nothing to disclose, just that talks are on; will surely share as and when I have something new.

Some tips for our jewellery lover readers…

Store your jewellery well. Not only because of the diamonds, gold or the cost involved in the jewellery, but the special moment is more important. One buys the jewel only for a specific reason and occasion, say wedding, anniversary, festival, birthday etc. Hence, life is too short, to capture the expensive moment is more important.

Also, buy the jewellery from a renowned designer or jeweller. The product purity is also essential while buying. End of the day, you are paying for the precious stuff. A well famed person will guide you the best with designs and quality.
